2015 Winter London/Oxford/Cambridge, UK
What I found very interesting about UK is that there are so many bicycle riders, CYCLERS — Not just in London, but also in Oxford and Cambridge as well. It seems like this is UK culture — what a healthy and environment-friendly culture @_@ Well, I did not even imagine there would be so many cyclers in London — thought people would just use bus/train/cars. Probably high transportation fees (or other reasons) has encouraged British people to rather use bicycle. Anyway, it was truly amazing to see how a bicycle is the national transportation here. (There will be 6 great links you should check out at the end of this post!)
런던을 돌아다니다 보면 버스, 차, 사람만큼 자주 보이는 게 자전거이다. 사실 런던뿐만 아니라 옥스포드와 캠브리지 또한 자전거 인구가 굉장하다. 영국 전역이 자전거 문화를 만들어나가고 있다고 해도 과언이 아닐 정도로, 자전거를 타는 사람들이 정말 많다. 런던을 뉴욕과 비슷하게 생각하고 온 나로써는 자전거 인구가 이렇게 많을 거라고 생각하지는 않았는데, 막상 와서보니 정말 어마어마하다… 어쩌면 교통비가 높은 것이 자전거 인구 증가에 일조하는 것일수도. (영국의 물가는 정말 미친 것 같다..)

What makes Cycling culture possible to go on and on in UK?
영국은 어떻게 자전거 문화를 만들어나가고 지켜가고 있을까?
Probably this kind of culture could not have been sustained just by cyclers. Another huge contributors are Bicycle repair shops/stores. While traveling around Oxford and Cambridge, I found not only many cyclers, but also many bicycle shops/stores that have contributed to sustain cycling culture/habit (and of course in London as well).
These stores not only provide repairing services, but encourage people to learn how to do it by themselves through workshops. It seems like people can even open their own bicycle shops after finishing such program in workshop.
단순히 자전거를 타는 사람들이 있다고 해서 이런 자전거 문화가 지속되는 건 아닐꺼라고 생각했다. 그러다 발견한 것이 자전거 수리점/가게들이었다. 하지만 우리가 흔히 생각하는 수리점과는 다소 차이가 있다. 이들은 자전거를 고치는 것뿐만 아니라 다양한 워크샵을 열면서 더 많은 사람들이 자전거를 타고, 자전거를 생활화할 수 있게끔 도와준다. 사람들이 자전거 수리법을 직접 배우면서 알아서 자전거를 유지할 수 있게끔 도와준다. 어떤 사람들은 이런 프로그램/워크샵 등을 통해 전문가가 되어 자기만의 가게를 차리는 경우도 있다. 이러한 로컬 비즈니스들이 자전거 문화 유지/개발에 큰 기여를 하고 있다.
Surprisingly, the very first Cycling place I found in UK was in Oxford.
In Oxford, right next to The Story museum (you need to pass through a Story museum cafe in order to find the museum and Broken Spoke Bike Co-op)
신기하게도 난 그런 사업이 존재한다는 걸 런던이 아닌 옥스포드에서 처음 알게 되었다. 옥스포드에 가면 스토리뮤지엄이 있는데 그 박물관을 들어가려면 꼭 거쳐야 하는 카페를 들어가면 스토리뮤지엄 반대 방향 골목에 이 샵이 있다.

Cycling workshop store I found in Cambridge — Secondhand Cycles
(I did not go inside though since it was closed but seems like a lot of locals would visit here)

And after spotting these in Oxford and Cambridge, I also found ones in London (*ironic*)
Look Mum No Hands, is Bike Cafe, not just a bike store/shop — sounds more friendly and approachable right? (or is it just me…) They basically combined the function of cafe, bar, and workshop space, which I think is very very verrrry smart!
Anyway, when I spotted this place, I thought the name of this bike cafe was space for cycling, but NOPE.
It is participating in Space for Cycling, which is current London’s hot & ongoing cycling campaign!

캠브리지, 옥스포드 이후로 런던에서도 찾은 이 곳!
Look Mum No Hands라는 독특한 이름의 가게였는데, 신기하게도 인터넷 검색을해보니 자전거 가게/수리점이라고 하지 않고 “자전거 카페”라는 명칭을 쓴다. 실제로도 카페/바 같은 역할도 한다고 한다. 가게 이름 자체도 그렇고 자전거 카페라는 타이틀도 그렇고, 싸이클러가 아니더라도 한번 쯤 들어가보고 싶은 곳!
유리창에 대문짝만한게 쓰인 Space for Cycling이란 로고는 가게 이름이 아니라, 캠페인의 이름이었다! 지금 런던에서 활발하게 일어나고 있는 자전거 문화 캠페인에 이 가게도 동참하고 있나보다. 궁금하다면 위의 영어 링크 클릭클릭!
This is Bike pop-up cafe that has been regularly opened in front of London College of Communication (nearby Elephant & Castle station). London By Cycle is also part of London Cycle Campaign!
이건 내가 지금 다니고 있는 London College of Communication 학교 앞에 주기적으로 열리는 팝업 자전거 수리 서비스 샵이다. London By Cycle 이라는 것 또한 런던 자전거 문화를 만들기 위한 캠페인 중 하나!

Researching these bike cafes/cycling workshops and stuff, I could see how many efforts people are putting in to continue and develop UK’s cycling culture. I had a quite naive thought that cycling habit/culture has been here for ages and therefore, it is just natural for most UK people. However, this movement to expand and promote cycling is still going on! Maybe because it is so easy to just give up bikes and get on the bus or tube – especially, in rainy weather. It is admirable how cyclers keep pushing themselves in many ways.
이전에는 관심도 없던 자전거에 대해서 조사하다보니, 런던 및 영국이 추진하는 이 자전거 문화를 이루기 위해 정말 많은 사람들이 노력하고 있는 것이 보인다. 처음에는 다들 자전거를 애용하다보니 그런가보다 하고 말았는데 정말 어리석은 생각이었다. 안 좋은 날씨로 유명한 영국인데도 불구하고 자전거를 타는 사람들이 꾸준히 늘어나고 있는 걸 보면 다들 정말 대단하다는 생각이 든다. 자전거 문화를 제대로 유치하려는 다양한 영국의 로컬 비즈니스, 단체, 기관들도 짱짱!

Cycling Culture in UK is definitely for a good cause — keeps environment more green, makes you healthy, and even constructs the identity of cycling nation (in a long term). A lot of people work for such campaigns and bike cafes with passion and positive motivations. They teach other people their cycling & repairing skills to spread out cycling culture — workshops for kids, and provide Build-A-Bike Graduates as well! Such contribution to the society creates more cyclers and some people even open their own shops/cafes to use their skills.
I cannot even imagine how hard it would be to make certain behaviour to culture, and to an identity. But these people are doing that. They are making a new identity of Britain — Cycling Britain!
장점을 너무 많이 가지고 있는 이 자전거 문화 – 환경에도 좋고, 건강에도 좋고, 나름대로 한 나라의 아이덴티티까지 형성하는 문화 – 를 열정을 가지고 지켜가고 이어가는 사람들이 영국 곳곳에 있다. 그들은 자기들의 기술을 단순히 상업 목적으로 이용하는 것이 아니라 사람들과 나누면서 하나의 문화 브랜드/트렌드를 만들어 가고 있다.
그러한 사람들의 관심과 노력없이는 절대로 이루어지지 않았을 영국의 자전거 문화 – 앞으로도 영국에서, 그리고 여러 나라에서 자전거 문화가 제대로 자리잡기를!

What a huge amount of research in this post – obviously as a cyclist I particularly enjoyed it. Love the Cambridge bike shop, such great wall decor. Also like the use of the pop up cycle tent outside the college – when I visited it wasn’t raining. So, have you tried a bike out yet? Nicola

haha yeah I did not expect this much research either but it was very very interesting how much effort people are putting to make this green and healthy trend! I personally am too scared to ride a bike on car roads in London 😛
